This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
