No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
