Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
