Based on data from Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives during detention beginning in October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has indicated that the actual number is probably substantially larger, due to numerous of unaccounted for detainees originating in Gaza.

Systemic Abuse

The systematic abuse occurred alongside a troubling surge in casualties recorded across no fewer than 12 detention centers in Israel. In the decade preceding the war, there were on average several casualties a year.

“This is not merely an isolated incident sporadically. It is widespread and it will continue,” an official commented, partly because there is a culture of virtual exemption from consequences for killing and mistreating Palestinian individuals.

Merely one incident of attacking prisoners has come to trial, with the military personnel sentenced to seven months. In 21 cases, mostly people from Gaza, researchers were unable to correlate the few details supplied by authorities to a casualty registered by human rights groups, by means of testimony from released detainees or reporting in the media.

The prisoners’ relatives could be unaware about their family members’ fatalities also, as Israel has made it difficult to locate detainees it is holding. For seven months at the beginning of the war, the Israeli military refused to provide essential data about the condition of thousands of individuals confined in Gaza, practically enacting a practice of unacknowledged detention, per the human rights group.
